OPS: Channels (I/O point) list
What prompted this project
This project involved a redesign of a vessel system alarm monitoring application. The application displays real-time data from all sensors in organized lists, allowing ship engineers to view the full system at a glance (or in depth).
Recent feedback revealed that the existing column headers and overall data layout were confusing, highlighting the need for a more intuitive and streamlined interface.
My role
I conducted research to identify friction points between the interface and its users, and developed solutions aligned with the project’s objectives. I also led the UI refinement process and conducted usability testing to evaluate the impact of these improvements on users.

Problem statement
What are we solving for?
How might we help users process complex or dense information while maintaining clarity about key distinctions?
Research
Information modeling
To understand why users struggled, I analyzed how digital and analog sensors function differently, what data each produces, and how users typically scan them during normal and alarm states. Digital sensors tend to work as a "switch function" where as an analog alarm measures as a numerical value on a fixed range. This domain understanding revealed that digital sensors need status/state clarity, while analog sensors need value trend clarity.
I reorganized the column structure according to the type of information each sensor type generates (as shown in the visual.
Ideations & wireframes
Increased scannability
I separated the digital and analog sensors and grouped related data together to reduce clutter and increase ease of scanning, all the while fitting the necessary routine data. This makes it easy to quickly grasp clusters (as all digital sensors or all analog sensors), which in turn enhances clarity, decision-making, and situational awareness.
